Hi all, there is one very bad news.

3 of NOW bikers's bike were stolen last night (10th December 2010) from Gautam Nagar area in Delhi. We make a public appeal to all of you to keep an eye on these bikes and if any one who sees or have any info about this bike, please contact Delhi Police on 100.

N.O.W. Bikers group organized an all day long "Helmet and Traffic Safety Awareness Campaign" in association with Lucknow Traffic Poilce on 31st May 2010 at 12 prime locations in Lucknow city. The aim was to come face to face with the city road users and inform them how they can take basic care and protection by wearing helmets and seat belts for their own good.

The main target commuters however were the motorcycles/scooter/moped users who are more prone to injuries and fatality in case of an accident. We distributed around 2000 flyers mentioning the importance of the basic protective gear of a rider that is his/her crash helmet.

Starting from 10:00 am in the morning, N.O.W. riders rode and stopped in pre-designated areas in the city marked as "dense" and "dangerous" for 2 wheelers and set up a group camp where daily commuters were stopped or approached with the leaflets and were provided vital information about the helmet and traffic rules. The emphasis was not just to tell everyone how important and life saving it can be to wear a helmet but to make them undertand how equally imporant it is to buy only and only good quality ISI or DOT marked helmets.

This campaign carried out by our lads, without any goveremnt/commercial funding was first of its kind in Lucknow city and we hope that we managed to change the outlook of the commuters towards their own safety to some extent, if not drastically.

A special thanks to DIG, SSP and SI of LUcknow Traffic Police for being so supportive about the whole idea and helping us to execute it successfully and also, to the print and screen media who spreaded the message through their medium.

Nainital Trip (Day2)

So here we were trying to open the eyes but thinking that the other person is still sleeping, Hence giving him some more time to sleep. this continued every 15-20 minutes and then realised that we both are doing the same thing. expecting the other person to get out of the bed. And somehow opened up my eyes and looked at my watch. Another plan went down the dreaming world. It was already 7AM and the plan of watching the Sunrise was all gone.Ordered tea, stood in balcony for around 10-15 minutes enjoying the lovely morning breeze and then took a warm bath. By now it was already 8AM, So settled our bills and went out to strol around the town.The morning view was even more amazing. the reflection of moutains and sky in the water was simply fantabulas.

The day was being celebrated as sports day by few schools. And few events were organised like a race around the lake and painting competition. The area which the school kids were supposed to cover in the race was huge. The lake in itself in big and the route that was given to the kids was even more tiring and lengthy. it included steep inclined roads and some sharp turns. If i was at their place then for sure i was out even before i could cover 10% of what they did. Cheers to all the school kids.
And then the painting competition. The crowd was so big that it felt like thousands of students are taking part in the competition

Then decided to take the boat ride. got it for 150 for two.

Now it was a time to pick up the bike from the parking lot. Had to use choke plus few kicks before it came to life.

So started again and this time thought of taking a complete circular route of the lake. Which included a steep ride through the town which was a real test for the bike and at few points my Uni simply refused to take the second gear. had to ride in the first gear itself.
So when the road became easier to ride, stopped at another beautiful point to click few more pics.

So started again and this time decided to stop at every given oportunity and every beautiful sight.

One thing that is worth mentioning here is the blueness of the sky. It was completly diffrent then what we see in our daily life. A perfect blue sky which is visible in few pics. You simply cannot stop appreciating the beauty of the nature which make every man made sculpture a microbe.
Example:

It was already 2 and decided to head back towards home. The heart kept on insisting to stay there for another day but at the end the brain won by fair margin. my friend: Gurpreet had office the very next day. So staying back for another day was out of question.
The roads are so tempting that you cannot resist from trying some extreme leans on every second corner.
The return journey in the mountain included 90% slope which meant i don't have to push my bike as hard as i was doing while climbing up. After sometime realised that keeping the engine on is not doing any good and the bike is moving without any push from the engine. After few minutes turned the egnition off and let the bike roll on it's own. I know thats not safe but at that point of time it felt so right and good that the complete return ride in the mountains was done in the same way. sometime the bike was crossing 60-65KMPH without the egnition and was having the fun of lifetime.

After covering the mountain there is a small town or village with the only Honda dealer and service center.
When i started by bike, realised that something is wrong. The front brake was almost non responsive and the engine was harsh.
Decided to get the bike checked at the service center as did't want to take any risk.
checked the Brake fluid and it was below the mark. filled it up and then asked the service guy to check the engine oil. It had turned complete black and thick.
changed the oil Honda oil as Power1 was not available.

After getting the bike checked started back again and it was already 3:30 By now.
wanted to cover as much distance as possible before sunset as i was aware of the bad stretch that i had to face.
first 100Kms went by like a fraction of second. the roads were good and tempting with almost no traffic.
And by the time sun said goodbye, we were on the bad patch of the journey.
And thats when things started getting bad from worse. People simply do not have any sence of driving in this route. they drive with high beam when they actually need low beam to see the huge craters on the road. No traffic sence, no proper signalling, no proper overtaking and no safe distance from each other.Also the signage is almost missing with no street lights. Sometime the road completly disappeared and gave way to some 5-6 feet deep dugups done by the road contracters. saw a Alto resting there. So the life is completly on your fates hand in this strech. No amount of your safe riding can save you if you do not have luck by your side. if it;s not you then it could be some nut who continously try to push you off the road or it would be a pothole which can put a crater to shame.
Anyways somehow completed this nightmare and it was 7Pm by now.
then after around 50 Kms from this strech you get a single lane road that hardly can take two buses at the same time.
This is where i thanked god 1000's of time for saving me.
i was crusing at around 30 because of the condition of the road and saw a bus coming from the oppsotite late. there was a petrol station on my left hand side and that ideot Bus driver suddenly took right to get into the petrol station and that too without any hand or blinker signal. I was just there on the spot, braked hard as much as i can, rear tyre locked up and skid. somehow saved myself and my bike from hitting the bus. And so few cars and bikes. everyone freezed up and virtually everything was standstill for few moments. Before i could realise as what happened, saw some guyz who were also missed hitting the bus was beating the driver black and blue.
After getting back to senses strarted riding again without letting my pillion know that we were almost gone. And made him believe that i was just checking the brakes when the bike skid.
After that took extra precaution till the time i dropped my friend safely to his home.

It was 8:30 when i reached home and took a cool bath. sat in front of the computer to update everyone that i was back and opened up xbhp. The first thing that came in front of my eyes was the shocking news of Kriss's untimly departure from the world with almost similar incident that i faced few hours ago.
It still send the shiver down my spine and still thanking god for giving me another change to be a better Biker, a Son, a brother, a friend and above all a good human being.

Nainital Trip: Day 1

After a hectic and tiring week at office, i was left exausted and stresses. So come Friday and was chit chatting with one of my friend and suddenly he said; why don't we go to some hill station this weekend?? Got hit by an idea that was buried somewhere deep inside due to the daily chores of the busy Delhi life. And it was already 11PM and i was in office. Decided to start the ride @ 4:00AM along with my friend as pillion and another friend on his Fiero F2. So finally my shift ended at 2:00AM Saturday morning and decided to rush back home to pack some stuff and get a bath. Went to parking lot and to our horror my friends bike was leaking. He had got servicing done just a day before and the amount of oil leak was immense. with every throttle it was spraying oil. So definatly we could not go as planned. Planned to get the bike checked @ 9:00 AM and then will ride together. So here goes our precious 5 Hours. went back home but could't sleep. But somehow fell prey to it at around 8:00AM and woke up with a kick on my arse at 10:AM. another hour lost. Saw a message in my box from my friend that he will not be able to join us, because he was busy sleeping. Sleep was more important to him then what we had planned. Anyways after cursing him for good 10-15 minutes we got ready. Sun was out with all it's strength and hell lot of traffic. Got the bike filled up with gas worth 570/- and filled up some air in tyres. So here we were starting our trip good 8 Hours late @ 12Noon. Anyways we were not concerned about the time shortage we had but we were more inclined towards enjoying the ride sans any timer. Roas conditions are good and some strechs are really good. That helps in making up for the lost time in the traffic. But then there is a pathetic patch of around 50Km's that kills the ride and the rider. aweful roads due to ongoing work that i've been seeing from the last 3 years. Same consition and no changes. My first stop was at Gurmukteshwar(probably). took some snaps and enjoyed the beauty of Ganga.

After the patch we went non stop to Mooradabad. and just after Mooradabad and before Ramput toll, there is a sharp left turn that leads to Jim Corbett. Took this route and after 3Km's took a right towards Nainital. roads are good with villages every few Km's. Took a butt break at a dhaba and hoped on food like a hungry soul.

Then after around 50Kms roads get awesome with almost no one on the road and both sides of roads covered with dense forest.

It was already 5 when i reached this place. And soon i was riding on a steep road. had to reset the tuning of my bike as it started breathing like it is not getting any air or petrol. And even after that my bike was struggling to some extent at every sharp turn. And the struggle was justified too. it was carring a total load of around 150Kg's. Myself being 65 and my friend (Gurpreet) being 85Kg's/

when we started climbing up it was already around 6 and sun was ready to set.
hence at a beautiful corner with enough space to park my bike safely clicked few pics.

Then after loking at the beautiful sunset for good 15-20 Minutes, we started again. This time moving bit slowly. encountered endless Langoors and Monkey's on the way. Another stop came in the form of a maggy point. eating maggy and special tea in hills at night or evening takes you to another world altogether.
After this it was a non stop ride till Nainital and lots of left-right-left turns.
reached Nainital at around 8:00PM, parked the bike at main parking lot near the small play ground. strolled around in the market. Eat boiled eggs, omletts and tea non stop at every given opportunity.

Then realised that we have not booked a room as of now. So the hunt for a decent room started. looked at a room and he asked a price of a small and compact room @500 a day and that too it did not have attached Bathroom. But the view was amazing.
Dropped the plan and went to anothe hotel and he gave us a room at 1st floor with balcony facing the lake and bathroom with good and wide double bed.
Liked it and after some buttering got the room for Rs.400/-.
so left the baggage at the room and went for another walk. The lake looks awesome at night. all the reflection of the mountain with small lights. It looks lovely.

finally came back to room at 11:00 PM and decided to hit the bed after a warm bath.
Decided to wake up at 4:00 and leave the room by 5:00 to witness the beautiful sunrise.

N.O.W. Group attempt to save environment and practise good road etiquettes

Vehicles are among the chief noise producers in modern times and its no doubt that 2-wheelers are the major contributors. We never like being honked but we always like honking, don’t' we? Congested roads in countries like India are having worst situation and no where near it seem lessening. People honk even if its red lights and the patience in road users are minimal. It’s simply unspoken that no one would like to be told, what to do and what not to do while riding/driving. As they say, if you want a change, be the first and start from yourself and the rest might/might not follow. Therefore, I would propose every N.O.W. rider (and who ever reading this and rides/drives) to be little more patient and humble on road and use almost zero honking while riding unless and until it’s really urgent.
Doesn’t matter, if you reach somewhere 5 minutes late but knowingly or unknowingly you will contribute to environment and practise good and responsible road etiquettes.

Please pledge here by replying that you will not honk unnecessarily and at inappropriate places (near hospitals, school, and religious gatherings) and will support this initiative.

My wheelie record attempt

I was just sitting around in cyberspace when I saw this guy Abishek from Gutzy roadies on Youtube doing a 13.3 km wheelie on his Pulsar 200. It was a fantastic sight to see the way the lad balanced the wheelie throughout the act, and it was a rewarding sight, even if he was from another group, to see an Indian guy holding candles to foreign stunt riders, as well as the Police Authorities because here in a country where the lack of roads means that stunters have to go ahead and try their skills on public highways. Stunting is not a generally accepted sport in the eyes of the nation, as it spoils the minds of young amateurs trying to imitate the stunts shown on T.V, in Ads etc. The authorities clearly stated that they won't tolerate stunts in public places,
but then, a question arises, where is a stunter supposed to go to went his lust for stunting?
These questions remain unanswered, but I had a few questions myself, for example, breaking a wheelie record means doing a wheelie along with the competitor in homogeneous (same) conditions, like the road length, bike, should all be the same, because only then will a systematic record be maintained, as well as make the event official, to prevent clashes with the ever insulting policemen.
Recently an unfortunate event spruced up in which one of India's finest stunter faced police custody because he was stunting in traffic on a public road. I completely agree with the law and order authorities as well as my group moderators that stunting in residential areas is unethical and unsafe but the prime suspect of these increasing incidents is the lack of infrastructure in our country. India is the largest Motorcycle markets in the world but it is sad to see the authorities which do not pay heed to motor sports and other events featuring automotives, because many country have included stunting in their sports list, and that is the reason foreign stunters are way ahead of us and also don't get involved in tense situations with the police as our stunters do. Stunting is not hazardous, unsafe, and unlawful, only if it's done in controlled conditions within surfaces designed purely for this purpose. Stunting is an art form and requires lots of practice to master, and it can be dangerous, sans safety gear, only those people who are prepared to be in tough situations should go for stunting as a stunters life is tough !!!
I have served under N.O.W. bikers since I was in 10th grade, and have been stunting since the last three years. Now I can do anything on one wheel except perhaps... breakfast, lolz. While viewing the record set by Abishek, I came to a conclusion that I should really attempt to break at least the 4 kilometre barrier aboard my Pulsar180,with all safety gear required as well as media backup. I hope my fellow bikers will support me on my opinion. I have chosen IIM road as the best bet as it is a rural area and the roads are arrow straight. The attempt will take place before 6 in the morning to avoid traffic. Adios bikers

250 kilometers in 3 hours 20 minutes (PART-2)

Day: Friday
Date: 21st March 2008
Time: 11:30 AM IST
Place: Rajpura, Punjab
Note: As in my early post I informed you guys about the condition of my bike. So got it serviced from Honda Service station in Rajpura, Punjab. Got overall engine repair done and also got a new number plate, rear indicators. But couldn’t get time to get the shocks repaired. Also to my surprise RVM’s were not available. Also searched in Ambala but no luck.
It was the day to come back to Delhi. So woke up at 8 AM. Took cold shower. Got ready. Cleaned the bike. And I was all set to roll again.

It takes less then 2-3 minutes to reach NH1 from my home. So in next 2-3 minutes I was on NH1. Filled up 4 liters of gas and started my ride back to New Delhi. After riding some time at a moderate speed of 60-70 KMPH. Then I realized that I have not taken a pic of the journey yet. So clicked my first pic when Ambala was just 15 KM away.

Slowly started increasing the speed and started cruising at 90KMPH. Before I stepped out of my home I expected good traffic but to my surprise it was very less. So it was like riding alone on the highway. After some time I realized that I should take a pic of my speedometer to check the distance covered. It was 27394.2 KM’s on the clock. Add another 15 KM’s from my home.

Then stopped to offer my prayers at Manji sahib Gurudwara, Ambala. Offered prayers from highway itself and started again.

Then planned to cruise again at a speed of 90 KMPH and above for rest of the journey.
Only stopped at some places to click some shots. Max stop was for 5 minutes. It was broad day light and Sun started to take its position over my head but decided not to stop.
Again stopped to click one more pic when Delhi was 152 KM away.

Started again and took next stop only after 35kms to click another pic. And Delhi was only 117KM away.

I knew that I have to face some traffic and lots of dust at panipat due to flyover construction. One thing is for sure that once this flyover opens up it will make the journey even sweeter. And I was right, met with heavy traffic jam for the first time in the day and loads of dust as a gift.

After that it was non stop ride till another halt at a point from where Delhi was just 44 KM’s away. And this point was the place where I clicked some beautiful pics of my uni and lovely NH1.

The maximum speed attained was 110 before panipat and 105 after panipat as maximum part of the highway is under construction.
Now I didn’t stop anywhere else because after the last sign board there was none which can tell you how far or close you are from Delhi. Entered Delhi and its mad traffic and reached office at 2:50PM.I covered the whole distance again in 3 Hours and 20 Minutes.
Was feeling good because I was still fresh and confident enough to take another 250 Km’s with ease. This also made me fall in love with Uni as it was still running very smooth. No signs of any tiredness and out of breath engine. No sore fingers or feets. No back ache. Just joy of reaching my destination.

Parked the bike in parking lot. All smiling and planning another trip. Mind running all over. Thinking, Sometime about Agra, Jaipur and sometimes HILLS.

250 kilometers in 3 hours 20 minutes (PART-1)

Another week at door step and another 2 day’s off on weekday. Was busy thinking as how to utilize them? Scratched my head a bit then more and an idea just fell into my so called brain. (What an idea sirjiJ ).
The idea was as follows:
I had an evening shift of 1630 hours to 0130 Hr in the morning, what a long day it was. Finished my work at 0200 hrs in the morning. Went to underground parking where my bike was waiting for me like a desperate Girlfriend who wanted to have a joyful ride with me. Now let me tell you the condition of my bike. Rear indicators fell apart long ago. One RVM got stolen another broken. So no RVM’s on this ride. Service overdue from the last 7 months. Huh... cylinder head needs replacement. Bent gear lever due to last accident. Oil leakage from the left front shock. And many more.
Now back to parking lot. Inserted the key. One smooth kick and heard the lovely sound of the engine. Went out; filled around 5 liters of gasoline. And I was all set for the adventurous ride.
My office is on the other side of the Yamuna River so Delhi border is around 20-25 KM’s away. A very easy ride till there. Not much traffic but only few trucks. Once I reached the border, got the first glimpse of traffic more then 2 KM traffic jam at 0230 in the morning. Thank god I was on my bike and not in a cage. Crossed the JAM with ease and then I was on open roads. Roads till Panipat are nightmare at night. Only single lane and lots of dust, sand and trucks. And I was on my bike without any eye protection. Intelligent me. J .
After that it was like a race of life for me. Wanted to cover the distance as soon as possible. Actually the reason behind this ride was that I wanted to test the extremes on my bike.
The Morning breeze was kissing my face and it was wonderful. Saw two big accidents on the highway and slowed down a bit for next 5 KM’s. But again started getting the momentum. After that it was mostly a ride at a speed of 100 and above. Somewhere I was worried of a breakdown but then I remembered wise words said by my client from US. He once said "Mandy a man has to do what he has to do". So I continued at a constant speed of 80 and above. Saw some Toyota Innova’s and indica’s on the highway looking at me like I’m an alien on an UFO on a deserted highway. Some kids started smiling at me and I felt like they are challenging me to overtake them. So couldn’t break their little hearts. Hence overtook lots of cars, SUV’s and trucks off course. But then had my share of defeat as well. L . Wish I had a CBR. Hummmm….Stopped at a Dhaba some 50 or so kms from Ambala. Washed my face and eyes especially. Few foreign bodies were resting in there with peace. But had to wash them off. Bechare. Took 2 awesome teas. Laid down on a fiber cott for a while but then got up. Paid for tea and I was back on where I was supposed to be. That’s my bike dumbo.
Then it was a ride at a speed of above 100 only till I reached Ambala. Once I entered Ambala Cantt I slowed down a bit as saw birds coming out of their nests, people coming out of their cozy homes and that lovely feeling on my face because of that cool morning breeze. But this lasted only for few minutes as I saw 1000’s of trees chopped of for widening the already beautiful road. To be very honest felt very bad. I mean before they chopped off the trees they should have planted new trees.
Well reached my home at 0640 in the morning and that was the first time I looked at my watch since I left from Delhi. I was at the front door of my home. Ringed the bell. And saw Mom with expressions which I can’t even describe here. The happiness which I saw on her face made my day even better. As I parked the bike she gave me a lovely hug and kissed on my forehead. Man I was the happiest person at that moment. And now I know that to see real excitement and expression of love from your family you should always surprise them in the sweetest manner.
Spent the day and next at home and then it was again time for me to ride back to Delhi.

Visited London Motorcycle Show 2008

Got up late Sunday morning at 8:30, and quickly packed my bag to move out. Reached city station by 9: 45 am and was in London Victoria by 10:45 am, though last night I planned to be at the entrance door of the venue before 9 am, but the plan remained a plan the other day. Took the underground to reach Canning Town (show location) tube station and after a 1 mile walk reached the London Excel (venue).

The location is beautiful as London Excel is located near a dock, and me just wanted to give some time shooting some water and power boats, but the approaching crowd towards the venue and numerous bikers gang passing by, remind me to visit the show first.

I was already behind my planned time schedule and realized that even it was Sunday, the visitors turn out was noticeable. Finally stepped inside the venue and reached S6 hall where the action was taking place. After a joyful short interaction with the ticket collector, I went inside and first thing I encountered was, lot of crowd. At first glance, I actually thought that the hall was small but it was after an hour, that I well realized that I haven’t covered even the half area of it. I was so excited to be there that I immediately starting taking pics of various bikes and stalls. Stupid me. I was so involve with the camera that I realized I am not giving enough time to myself to actually stop, look and admire the beauties standing in front of me, therefore I decided to have a casual look of the place first and then come back for images and video shoot. First thing the visitor could see in the exhibition was the “reality”. There were 2 stage with real bike wreckages, involve in road accidents with the accident site on the background

Absolutely loved the concept. What a silent way to alert that sometimes fun comes with risk too. Moved ahead and the first stall I saw was of Honda, though it was the smallest stall compare to other bike manufacturers but one needed an oxygen cylinder to breath, as there was no space to even scratch your butt and the bike that was the glory of the Honda stall was the ’08 CB1000R. I never judged ’08 CBR until now, because people say that it looks much better than in pictures, but I was not convinced (total personal opinion here). There were hundred other bikes in that hall which looked way better then CB1000r, but might not perform as well as this “punched nose” machine. CBR125, Goldwing, Hornet 600 and one pocket bike added the bike count. There was a Honda’s British superbike pro racer, Leomn Haslam signing autographs for the fans. I don’t take autographs of people I don’t know.

Next was Yamaha, again not to much space for people to get a proper view of the bikes from a distance. I guess, because it was allowed to sit, crouch and feel the bikes personally, they were not placed in some kind of elevated stages, making the bikes visible to every body at the same time. That made taking pics an annoying and strenuous experience. You will hardly see any bike without a person sitting on it, in my pics, because everybody wanted to know how the sitting posture and feel of the bike is. The bikes Yamaha had 2 racing edition R1s, FZ1 both (ABS and without ABS versions) but surprisingly MT 01 was missing (or did I missed it?). They also had their ’08 model line up of R6, maxi scooters and learners bike YBR125. But the real deal for me was ’08 YZF-R125. “WOW” was my first reaction to the bike, as I sat on it. This bike, from no where feels like a 125cc until you want to hear the engine. Very comfy, sporty and not that small in size as you would expect. I don’t know how R15 looks in flesh but I truly hope that Yamaha possibly had pictures of R125 beside their sketching pad when they designed R15, if only it is really not a R1 DNA. YZF-R125 is a perfect bike for those how don’t mind buying an over priced ride and want to start/learn basics of sport biking. For once, I imagined myself riding this bike here may be in future, but with the price of 2 R-125, why wouldn’t I’ll buy a bike having four and half times bigger engine capacity, but that’s again a personal choice and baseless dream for now. I can right now write a full “totally biased” essay on R125, but it’s 2 in the morning here and I have my college tomorrow. Anyways, R6 with golden rims looks smashing besides the fact it’s a 135 bhp “ride anywhere, anytime” capable bike.

Suzuki stand was the most detailed one I would say displaying every single model they have in their portfolio plus the new ’08 range is really promising. I would commit here at this point that I have started having a thing for GSX-Rs now I Don’t know why. May be it’s the design or the competitive pricing, but I am falling in love with blue colour. Revised 600, 750 and 1000 with B-King and GSX1300R, I believe they have answers to every secret wish. I won’t go blah-blah again, about things I would kill somebody to get hands on but would rather try to give details of what happen in London Motorcycle Show 2008. However, don’t complain if I talk less or nothing at all about cruisers and touring bike, because I like faired objects. The new 750 is totally seducing, thought one might argue that 600, 750 and 1000 share visual identities but even twins have different figure prints. I have no shame in making it to public that I would look terribly ugly and skinny on ’08 B-King. That bike need a brave heart to right and control, at least that’s what I figured out from its appearance, but it’s a piece of art. 650F is a nice street bike and would be surely easy on long rides I think.

Ducati? I don’t even wanna start this. An Italian will be an Italian and that’s just mere words. If numbers ever excite me then it would be 1-0-9-8 and 8-4-8. I previously saw few first hand reports, comparison with 1098 and riders views about new 848 and after Ducati decided to discontinue 6XX superbike series, 848 had too much expectations from everyone and she proved herself, perfectly. MCN reviews the bike as a smaller 1098 engine version but that’s the only difference they think, both 1098 and 848 have. 848 is said to be more “flickable” than 1098 and easier to handle at high speeds, with not much difference in top end. I felt really good after visiting Ducati stall and physically interacting with the bikes. No doubt, Ducati is exclusive and wears an attitude of its own; so much that their website requires you to sign up to download a simple wallpaper, cool enough. Monster tricolour looked good but I was a bit disappointed not seeing 1098 in the same colour pattern. Moved ahead with head still face still turned to 1098 until I see this RC8.

KTM stall was cool too, with Dukes and dirt bikes range. Their newly launched RC8 is surely creating wave and I could hear comments about the bike where people saying “it pretty good” or “this one is exciting”. Had to wait as 3-4 guyz were keener then me to hop-on the bike. I smiled, said “please” and stood along side for the mean time. Finally the young lads stepped down and here I go. Not bad at all, I said to myself. The bike offers you comfort and confidence, but if I could somehow ride it, (of course virtually in simulator) then that would have been a complete experience but this was one of the many things I was surprise to that not even a single bike company had a simulator for visitors to throttle the bike. I was very much expecting this thing in LMS. Another thing that deeply hurt me was all the babes were GONE, and I had no idea where. MCN website www.motorcyclenews.com/mcnbabes (PS: mature content) played trick on me by showing hundreds of gorgeous entries for the show, but there were only 3 girls in total, in which 2 were out of shape. Nevertheless, visiting Kawasaki stall and seeing ZXR1400 and Ninjas changed my mood and I dropped the idea of suing MCN magazine.

Kawasaki new range was not so appealing for me. And to be straight down, I personally never liked Kawas, and not in mood to write about them half hearted. Sorry Kawasaki. But, Ninja 250R is a good bike for India and I am glad that it’s coming. It’s has a bit low sitting height of 775mm (for me that is, I am almost 6 feet) but of course no compromise except that part. Again, I can’t help my self directly comparing it to R125, in terms of appearance and feel only. R125 for me, any day, though I stupidly forgot to look at the price of Ninja 250R. I think Bal/Kawa, who ever will be responsible for pricing, should release the 250R with a sensible price tag, so that more and more people can get familiar with well made bikes.

This write up is getting painfully longer and sorry, if you feel it has nothing new to say. I’ll just rap up with BMW stall review which was the last minute sneak in. I knew almost nothing about BMW but now have slight blur picture of what they do and what they make. The HP2 Sports was one BMW bike of whom I clicked the most shots (remember? I still love faired objects) but I think they speak to limited genre of consumers, who have old and good faith in BMW. I will try to ponder more about this company in coming time.

Beside the bike companies, there was a large market of riding gears and aftermarket stuff. If got time will post about them too, but there’s nothing much to tell besides some exhaust makers and after market panel stalls.

LMS 2008 Update #02 Ready and geared up

Thankfully got a 400D from my college, as I still wait for my cam to be delievered. Batteries are charging and so am I. I am taking 3 DVDs for handy cam and 1 extra battery for the 400D plus some munching stuff.

As for now, I have planned to get off from here early and reach the venue around 9-9:30 am, if not before that.

What a kick start to my morning after seeing London Motorcycle Show tickets lying on my doorstep, which I booked online 2 days back. Really excited to visit the action and dreaming of winning Ducati 848 ;)

But... but... but... how can every thing go so smoothly with me? Unfortunatly, I haven't received my delivery of 400D which I purchased 3 weeks back, from ebay and just praying to god that it gets to me before friday, other wise the 10 MP shots of Ducs and MVs will be missed. ohh nooo...did I mentioned MCN babes?

Speed meets control in Lucknow

The 2nd Castrol Throttle Max was successfully held on 12th May 2007 in Lucknow. This was the first time ever any motor sports event was organized in Lucknow. Such type of event was very much awaited by all the “speedy boyz” of the city since years. Castrol finally flagged off the event here including in other cities like Jalandhar, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and in many other places.

Day One: Scrutiny Day 11th May 2007 1600 Hrs

There were total 29 riders, who took part in Lucknow venue. 4 riders in “under 125 cc” and rest 25 in “125 cc and above”, including participants coming from Jodhpur and Kanpur also. The scrutiny day was on 11th May 2007 from 1600 hrs onwards, where performance oriented modified bikes were kept out of the venue as the event was only for stock bikes. However, the scrutiny process according to me was just for the sake of it. How can a mechanic/official check whether a bike is modified or not without even starting it's engine? The scrutiny card was allotted to riders, by just “visually” checking the engine, silences and clutch and brake levers. They were very meticulous about the bikes having chain covers but were not bother about whether the bikes was ported or not. Well, that was some thing I couldn’t get it.

Well, during Scrutiny day, unexpected gusty winds and heavy rain blew all the race track markings and stalls but fortunately, we all were already out from the venue as our scrutiny was done well before. Our next stop for the evening was Castrol Bike Zone where each one of our bikes were repaired and tuned to give better performance on the track.

Day two: Race Day 12th May 2007 0800 hrs

Got a call from Kushal, when I was still in my bed and realized that I should be at the venue by that time. Over to that, due to excessive outing past few days, I had 101 degree temperature when I woke up. First thought of not participating in the event but excitement took over my body pain. I rushed to the venue. Not to mention, I didn’t even took a bath and my breakfast. But thank god, not much was done till I reached there at 0845 hrs. One thing new which raised my eyebrows was seeing few “biker boyz” of the city with the riding gear ON for the very first time. People who used to think that wearing helmet put on extra weight on their bikes were total packed inside the jacket, knee guards and gloves on race day. No, it wasn’t that they realized the importance of riding gear but were sadly following the event rules which required wearing proper protective gears and I saw many bikers for the first time with a helmet and knee guards. Hopefully, after this event, they will shell out their hard earned pocket money on buying standard riding gears then putting that Xtra exhaust on their Hayabusas.

With second round of scrutiny getting over, we all were game for the event. With short briefing about the 3 rounds of the event by the officials, one by one participant were called on starting line and every one was trying to do their best. The very first participant (Sorry, don’t know that talented man name) was like …. WTF. He was from Jodhpur and definitely seems to be a pro-rider in dirt racing. He ended the round before we could even figure it out, how well he started. The combination of drifting and balancing by that rider was “never seen before” stuff for every one there. Much applause for him from the audience there.

N.O.W. Riders (Kushal, Zeeshan, Adeel, Abhinai, Sujeet) gave fair enough overall performance with our “would be member” Talha grabbing 1st overall ranking (Under below 125cc category, Group D) and Zeeshan getting 2nd overall ranking (Under 125cc and above category, Group D)

Kushal was the unluckiest dude on earth that day, bagging the best timings under Zigzag and Drag rounds but got disqualified, as he crossed the final braking line on both the events. I guess, it was not his day and neither was mine. In the drag round, I started well but never expected the track to be so bumpy. After crossing the finishing line with almost full throttle, it was really hard to hold the bike, flying through that un-even ground and seconds later, I did the biggest mistake by jamming the rear tyre in order to stop before the braking line. Some how manage to be on my feet while my bike goes skidding on grass. Nothing happened to me, due to riding gears but my bike had a twisted leg guard in the end. A very minute damage compared to the intensity of the accident. Falling is a part of biking and we all know that, so it was all very normal out there as soon as I was back on bike. Paramedics asked me if I am OK and I gave them thumbs up.

There was an xBhpian too named Abhishek Gupta, participating with his Pulsar 150, who came all the way from Agra just for the event. He was good with 6th overall standing, with me on his tail finishing 7th. Karizma 225 owners were having a bit tough time going through the corners due to its heavy weight and turning radius. Sujeet, being only into drags and with a short height, was not so impressive in Zigzag event but gave a competitive timing of 5.22 seconds in drag.

Not satisfied with their performance in Lucknow Venue, N.O.W. riders (Sujeet, Kushal, Rudra, Kushagra along with Zeeshan for cheering them up) are also taking part in Delhi venue and by the time this blog was written, I got the news that they have successfully registered today (18th May 2007) on the scrutiny day.

Zeeshan and Talha have graduated for the finals in Indore, which is to be held on 15th-16th June 2007. Wishing them all the best.

All together, it was a new experience for all of us and we hope that numerous such type of motor sports event continue to take place in the City of Nawabs, because the need is N.O.W.

Castrol Throttle Max 2007 : Practice Run

We made our own small little track in an isolated area of Lucknow where we practised for 3 days before finally participating in Tmax event '07

As a result of this practice only, we bagged 1st and 2nd position in "125 cc and above" category and 1st position in "below 125 cc" category.

It was finally the day for the GIR team to leave and complete the last 500 kms route to Delhi of the journey of their lifetime. How they did it, what they did and where they went, all those things are listed and documented in their GIR website for the world to see and take note the intensity of biking, Indians can do and have done. We all escorted them till outskirts on airport road. In the way between, TOI reporter had a short photo shoot and interview of the GIR team. After wrapping that up, we stopped for the last moments with the GIR where we wished them best of luck and they said good bye with a smile on their face. I guess that’s what we wishing for to see in the end.

Next morning, after all the dazzles and flashes, it was quite, gloomy and unsettled feeling as GIR team was about to leave for Agra to end up their 108 days tour in New Delhi after 2 days. I wanted them to stay for a bit longer, at least for one more day, if not two. There were hundreds of question I wanted to ask from each and every member of GIR especially from Sunny. We both shared the same passion, same career interest, were from the same part of the country i.e. North India and probably shared the same focus and vision for our individual self initiated bikers groups, but all hours were too less to do all the talking.
Few IIM students who was just passing by stopped for a photo with GIR team and were amazed to see the superbike, don’t realizing that after they will pass out from their college, they can easily get a new one every month, with the pay they will be offered by MNCs. Anyways, we suppose to ride with Sunny and team till Lucknow suburbs and we did. In between, sunny needed to refuel his bike with 97 octane petrol, which was not available on the petrol pump we stopped in, which was on the highway leading to Agra. Sohaib quite knew that place around and went with sunny to look for another pump. They did find a pump with 97 octane petrol and came back, but suddenly sunny got a call from some one in Castrol I think, and they informed him that the press meet in Agra which was suppose to happen next day, has been cancelled due to some reason and that means they now need not to hurry to reach Agra within hours today. Sunny gave us the happy news that GIR is staying that day in Lucknow and will leave tomorrow. Who says 13 is an unlucky number, that day wasn’t. We already started having ideas about how we gonna utilize this lucky day with GIR. We had so many plans in mind and wanted to do so many things, one of it was to take the GIR team to an under construction highway near airport road, which is usually empty with no risk of any alien object appearing in middle where we could really see the CBR in its glory. But unfortunately, Sunny couldn’t go as he had to report back to IIM about his cancellation of the toady’s trip and had some due work of the xBhp.com online contents. A good chance for us was lost. But Sohaib invited them to visit his father’s Yamaha dealership in Chowk, where CBR could get a quick wash.
We all went to the showroom where Sohaib’s father Mr. Zubair Khan delightfully met the tourers. We all had tea together and then CBR was taken to the washing bay, where sunny revved the CBR engine for our ears and the decibels were multiplied in that enclosed service area. After spending some good time in showroom, sunny went back to IIM, and Sunil and Ashish went to shopping and experience the street food (especially non-veg. dishes) of old Lucknow with N.O.W. riders. I, for a break went back to my home for some work because I was out since morning with out any declarations. Nilesh and other riders had good time roaming around streets of Lucknow though. By the time I came back, it was time for Sunil and Ashish to go back to IIM and prepare for the departure tomorrow. We all left them in IIM and came back to the city.

N.O.W. meet xBhp.com (Day 1)

It was around 10 am when I reached the guest house. Rudra and Vipluv were already there and we waited outside in parking for every N.O.W. riders to come. By the time Sunil and Ashish came outside, all prepared and we asked about their experience so far and if they had good sleep. We shot some videos too with them. After an hour Sundeep came out with his CBR and gave a pre-ride inspection to the bike and I guess he had some idling issue with the bike in the beginning. I didn’t interfere and let Sunny and Ashish sort out the problem. Eventually bike was ready to ride. The plan for the day was to go to IIM (Indian Institute of Management), Lucknow situated around 15 kms from the hotel in outskirts of Lucknow, where Sunny was suppose to meet on of his relative and also to give a presentation to IIM students about GIR and the story so far. Later for the day, we decided to have a sightseeing of famous tourist spots of the city like Imambara and Bhulbhulaiya. After having the breakfast at Aryans, every body was ready to ride. The Lucknow chapter of the xBhp was just about to begin. We started from Kapoorthala’s congested roads towards IIM, through Aliganj and Jankipuram, which finally leads to the highway with considerable less traffic. It was really exciting to escort the team of GIR and being their host for a day. We were around 12-14 bikers all together, finding our way through gazing animals, slow commuters and unpredictable pedestrians on city road until we could hear the sound of the CBR fire blade, clearer and louder on highway. It wasn’t unusual at 40-50kmph until sunny accelerates the bike for few seconds in between; in empty stretches and the ultimate hummm… sound of the superbike just gets into everybody. Though, after every such “blast” it took us ages to make up with him again on our small bikes, and it wasn’t clear who was escorting who. Nevertheless, that was our first encounter with nice machines including 250 cc Kinetic Hyusong Comet and Kinetic Blaze and we were happy to be around them.
We reached IIM and parked our bikes outside. Had a small group photo shoot by sunny for his website content and then GIR team went inside the campus with special permission they had. We waited for them outside and were planning the least congested route possible to Imambara and Bhulbhulaiya. We were very much concerned about the way through city to various tourist sights. We didn’t wanted GIR riders getting uncomfortable on the way because of hooligan riders which were in ample numbers in Lucknow roads, and could take any one down with their stupidity and show-off. Not to mention, a superbike on local roads to them would seem like a super model in bikini in open, on which they won’t’ miss hitting. Still very less we could do to avoid such situation. After a while, Sunil, Sunny and Ashish came out of the campus and luckily, GIR riders managed to get the guest rooms in IIM through references but sunny said that he has to prepare the presentation for the IIM students so he won’t be able to come to sightseeing and will remain in the campus for next few hours but everybody will go together in the evening when the press meeting would take place in SaharaGanj Mall, Hazratganj.
All the N.O.W. riders with Sunil, Ashish and Gurjant started towards old Lucknow. I sat as a pillion on the pilot bike in the 2x2 group formation to capture the best feasible videos and images. Initially, the ride was well organized but everybody soon lost the line as we enter the busy city territory. Any how, at around 3 pm we all reached the Imambara and I, Nilesh, Sunil and Gurjant went inside the Bhulbhulaiya while Ashish and other N.O.W. member waited for us outside on the pavement. It appeared history was not Ashish favourite subject in school. We four of us inside, shot pictures of the historic buildings and Sunil and Gurjant shared their experience of encountering bunch of ragging villagers who stopped them for money and wouldn’t let them pass by.After visiting the hotspots of the Nawabi city, it was time to head back IIM campus so that the GIR riders could relax and brace themselves for the press meet, later that evening. In the mean time, few of us decided to have our late lunch and be right back at the campus gate.
It was around 5:30 pm when every thing was set and we were about to go to SaharaGanj Mall for the press meeting organized by Castrol for xBhp. Around 6 pm we were outside the mall and GIR team was totally responsible for putting a stop to the road traffic with their presence. Journalists and photographer from TOI had a photo shoot of GIR riders then and there. Later, team and their bikes were called inside the Mall by the security, and everybody had a fun time posing for photographers. Sunny and Sunil gave interviews to journalist during their press meet and we all posed with the GIR bikes for our bunch of photos and videos. It was the night that was so special for us. We all had a nice time being with Sunny and the team through out and just wanted to have a blast together, as this was our last evening with them… or it wasn’t?

The First Impression

It was roughly around 1 pm and I was about to have my shower ( late as always ) when I got a call and heard the person at the other end introduced himself as Sunil of xBhp GIR team. I was thrilled and energized. It was actually happening, Lucknow city and we were about to be a small part of The Great Indian Roadtrip 2nd leg forever. Sunil asked me if we can come and meet them somewhere in suburbs of Lucknow and I instantly said yes as we were waiting for this to come about, since GIR (The Great Indian Roadtrip) started. But initially it wasn't happening, as when the route was planned and led out on xbhp.com, Lucknow was not one of the checkpoints GIR team was suppose to go through. They were skipping Lucknow and were going directly to Agra and that was really heartbreaking to know because GIR was the only chance we all could meet the people who were mere online profile IDs for us. How they talk, what they talk and what was so extraordinary in them that they were out on roads to complete 18,000 kms run before they see their family and friends again after 3 months? All the question were about to be answered as I called up each and every N.O.W. rider for a urgent meeting to grace ourselves and be prepare to be with them for next 24 hours. We meet up around 3 pm and discussed what we need to do to make the “guests” feel home. One hour passed by and we were still waiting for their call to know where they have reached. Around 5:30, I eventually got the call and they were somewhere in Lucknow cantonment. Neither they, nor we knew the exact place they were.
The small search begins and which was fun actually, but I didn’t wanted to waste any time as they were some where standing and waiting for us and the night was falling. After exchanging some calls, we finally tracked them. I and Kushal were first to reach them followed by rest of the N.O.W. group some minutes later. I saw 3 riders; Sundeep a.k.a. Sunny (xbhp.com, founder), Sunil a.k.a. SunilG (team rider) and Ashish a.k.a. Gasolinejunkie (team rider) and I saw the vehicles. The cantonment is green with nature but every thing seems red and black that time, because from their riding gears to GIR vehicles, every thing were coloured with sponsors logos and identity. Sunny was busy on call and I didn’t knew Sunil and Ashish much appearance wise, but the moment was strangely quite. We were hesitating, or were feeling shy or whatever you might wanna call it but for initial 2-3 minutes no one was talking to anyone. Funny it was, when I now recall the whole situation. But Sohaib and Vipluv broke the silence and both parties gelled easily right away. We asked about their well-being and the previous route experience so far. Sunny told that their back up vehicle has been pulled over outside the city limits and they were waiting for GIR team to check in some hotel so that they can directly come to that location. It was almost dark and we needed a hotel for them to stay while they were here in Lucknow.
I have to now confess that I personally misunderstood the way GIR rides were riding since few days. I honestly thought that their 10 big sponsors were funding them sufficiently to stay in good luxurious hotels, where ever they went. I was so silly, not to realize they were riding out in dirt, heat, cold and snow for India, to shows its glory to the world and were not having a lavish holidays. I was bit shocked to hear that their budget for per night was INR 800-1200 only and sincerely, I had no hopes that we will be able to find a hotel room with that limited budget, at least that same night. To add to the pain, all the low/mid-cost hotels in Lucknow had no space left due to on-going wedding season. People in north, generally book hotels/guest house for their outstation guests and relatives while they attend any marriage ceremony. This whole experience of ours has been better penned down by Ashish on GIR blog in very humours way. Finally, after our boys begged at numerous receptions for a decent single room to stay, we finally got a room in Rajasthan guest house near Kapoorthala above ICICI bank, whose old skinny manager had no interest in us, our guest and their purpose of being there and neither was excited, when we told him that he and his guest house might get illustrious by the media coverage which was scheduled tomorrow for the GIR team. We had no option, truly and we had to take what we were offered despite that place not being so cool, but that’s, I guess what you ask for when you want to see the real India from a tourer’s prospective. It was already 9 pm by the time GIR team checked in. Sunny was a bit concerned about the parking of his CBR fireblade and we did manage to get a dark, lonely but a bit cramped space, in the porch of the building for the night. In the mean time, backup vehicle with the driver Gurjant also arrived. After an hour of biking discussion in the hotel room, we finally left those 3 exhausted souls in their rooms and came out discussing day plans for tomorrow.

A short ride to Indira Dam

4 bikers and one nice overcast day was a perfect recipe for a ride on 29th July. N.O.W. riders Abhinai, Aditya, Mandhir and Shailendra (new member) went to an uncertain route to Indira dam. We heard of this place from our fellow member Nilesh and Akshat, as they have been there quite number of times. And our decision regarding a short trip to that dam proved fruitful when we reached there and met with untouched beauty of the nature.
Nothing was pre-planned as such. We all 4 met in noon around 12 PM and went to Hindustan Times office to meet a journalist regarding an article to be published about N.O.W. group in the newspaper. Till we came out, it was time for lunch and we headed to near by Sahara Ganj Mall to fill our empty stomach. But how could we go back home so soon. Our rebellious mind starting thinking where to head now??? After few discussions, all agreed to a ride to Indira dam. With out wasting a second, we started our bikes, refueled them and headed towards Chinhat road. The initial start was a little slow because of modest showers. Riding in 2 x 2 formations, was unique and impressive on road to watch, for others. After crossing B.B.D. Engineering College, we had to ask a local road side panwala to guide us to the route of Indira dam. The narrow, hardly constructed road to dam was full of stones and pebbles, adjacent to which was a wide canal with gusting flowing water in it. Riding bike in that road was a real new experience. With Canal in one side and fields on the other, we were in a doubt that is it really our same crowdie and noisy Lucknow???
We had a small halt on an unmanned railway crossing, were we found a bridge as our first photo shoot point. After clicking some shots, it was time to continue. The road ahead became even worst because of the recent rains. It was more like a dirt track now and we did some off-roading on it. Standing on our bike’s foot pegs and using our legs as shock absorber, we raced our bike to 80 kmph on those bumpy roads. Aditya took over me several times at dangerously 95 kmph. Mind you, riding on those roads full of pebbles, stones and water filled holes, where it hard to figure out their depth until you ride over them is really challenging and daring for some. I couldn’t go beyond 75-80 kmph and so as Mandhir and Shailendra. The overall length of that narrow road was around 15 kms. But all together, it was one awe-inspiring off-roading experience.

Finally after reaching Indira dam, we were so excited to see the architecture of the bridge. It is constructed to carry the flowing canal water in between the 2 lanes of road. How could I miss to capture such a splendid construction in my cam. Time for photo shoot session no.2

After having a nice site watch and clicking some beautiful sunsets, we just wanted more. It couldn’t end here. Asked some local resident and they told that the current road will meet a highway, continuing to Lucknow cantonment. The next 25 kms fast ride was about to begin. After leaving that same old slow narrow road, we got a chance to race our bikes on that smooth 2 lane highway. What a speed run it was. 4 Bikers zapping pass by, one by one, several 100 CCs, cyclist and pedestrians. The expression on their face was as if they saw 4 flying saucers coming from no where and heading towards infinity. Finally the city’s cantonment arrived. A place called “zig-zag” in cantt. was our next stop. As name indicates, it contains zigzag pattern roads and riding on them is pure fun. Spent some good 30 minutes there and finally we all headed back for our homes with smile on our faces, dirt on our bikes and satisfaction in our minds.

Night ride to Kanpur

When the itch for riding grows, nobody can stop you from going out, no matter what's the time of the day it is. The same case was with Aditya and Nilesh when they decided to have a quick ride to Kanpur city on 27th night.

This is what Aditya have to say after completing a 225 kms run altogether: "It was a short ride of 95 km from one side. We started at 1.30am and reached Kanpur by 3.00am. Riding at night was challenging and great fun. Kanpur highway is a smooth stretch of about 78 kms, which we covered in roughly 45 min during the return, as we started at 5.00am from Kanpur towards Lucknow to our way back. The roads were perfectly empty during return. As for the ride it wasn't back aching as we had thought rather it was a perfect overnight cruise."
